Hello,

My journey into cinematography began in 2017, after three years working at an advertising agency in Johannesburg as a designer, animator & corporate commercials editor. After moving to Cape Town, I picked up a Canon 5D & Panasonic GH4 and started filming lifestyle brand films, music events, and small-budget documentaries. Curiosity then led me to develop an obsession with 35mm & street photography.

I learned through observation and conversation while building experience by immersing myself in camera shops, rental houses, and on sets. Working in the South African freelance industry has taught me to be adaptable, resourceful and willing to contribute wherever needed. I have worked as a camera assistant, camera operator, offline editor, and stills photographer, specializing in unit photography, while continuing to pursue my goal of working full-time as a cinematographer. The time that I’ve spent on set working as a behind-the-scenes photographer and a camera operator, I used as an opportunity to learn from the experienced cinematographers and directors. I observed their processes, had discussions about ideas and creative problems and these experiences have been a valuable part of my development as a director of photography.

I am drawn to projects that take me into diverse and demanding environments. I have worked in Senegal, Nigeria, Rwanda, Madagascar, and Kenya, filming human-driven stories where light, movement, and conditions cannot always be controlled. These experiences have strengthened my ability to prepare thoroughly while remaining responsive and adaptive to the environment. My work has led me to projects that include shooting sports, automotive, fashion, and narrative short films.

For me, the purpose of strong cinematography is always to serve the story rather than impose an image on it. I value preparation, but I am open to spontaneity, collaboration, and the unexpected moments that can make the visuals feel authentic. I believe there is no single formula for building a career in cinematography. I want to develop my own path rather than follow what the industry says success should look like. That means continuing to learn, taking on challenging work, creating my own projects, and collaborating with people whose ideas I love and respect, much like the work at LOOP.

I try to approach every collaboration with curiosity and humility. I believe leadership does not have to mean having the loudest voice in the room, but rather creating a space where good ideas can come from everyone. The best cinematographer is not necessarily the person with the strongest individual vision, but the one who can bring together many different talents and help move them toward a shared visual idea.
